Children and Young people from Show Me That I Matter and Show Me That I Matter 2 came together with Inspired Youth at West Offices in York to lock hearts and minds on the vision for the A Care Story project.
Once we had created the vision and young people could understands the journey and aims we had conversations around the way it feels to be in care and the kinds of dilemmas, challenges and emotions you face through the experience.
The crew quickly started to articulate their views and experiences as we split into two groups to explore care experiences.
“I don’t want to be treated differently”
As a group we decided on some boundaries for the project to ensure we apply respect and empathy through the process. The group came up with a positive and conclusive list of rules to abide by during the project:
- No Bullying
- Be kind to people
- Have Fun
- Phones on silent
- Bring Hob-Nobs
- Don’t be afraid to speak up
- Listen to others
- Have respect for each other
- Respect the equipment
- Be empathic
- Respect sensitive subjects
- No swearing
“Don’t be scared to speak up!”
Next we discussed what issues children and young people face in being in care. The team were very articulate and engaged in the discussions very well.
We broke into two groups and made some notes to record common themes. There was a lot of insight and experiences being shared which would help the project move forward and gather momentum.Below you can see the kinds of issues young people felt that they were facing as children in care. There were some similarities in the discussion points from both groups. Take a look below:The project was positively poised to move onto the next stage where young people will meet the inspiring author and music journalist Paolo Hewitt, who is also famous for writing “The Looked After Kid.” In the next session the team will share their experiences with Paolo who will write a story to highlight the impact of the care journey on mental health. The story will be influenced by the groups conversations with Paolo which he will record to inform the story.
